Dashing Dishes

This is the next method in which our mels will be prepared. Anything that will save time & sanity until we're through the adjustment period of toddler & infant.

Mmmm, mmm, good!

Check out these two new recipes that we tried over the last week. The breakfast dish is definately not healthy, but super tasty. And the stew is wonderful! My favorite husband feels they're both worth making again.

WifeSaver Blueberry French Toast
1 Loaf Bread
250 g Cream cheese, sliced thin (block of cream cheese)
1C Fresh/frozen blueberries
12 Eggs
2C Milk
1/3 C Syrup

Sauce:
1C sugar
2TB Cornstarch
1C water
1C Blueberries
1TB margarine

Cut crusts off & tear bread into "cubes". Line a 9x13 in pan with 1/2 of the bread cubes. Layer slices of cream cheese over the bread. Top with blueberries. Add remaining bread cubes. Beat eggs, milk and syrup together an pour over the bread. Cover & refridgerate over night.
The next morning bake covered at 350 degrees for 30 min. Uncover and bake 30 min more until the center is set. To prepare sauce, combine sugar, cornstarch and water in a sauce pan. Boil gently until thicken stiring often. Reduce heat, add blueberries an cook until beries burst. Remove from heat and stir in the margarine. Pour over French Toast before serving.

Are you a crockpotter? I love the crockpot. Here's a tasty morsel to try!
North African Beef Stew
1 1/2 lbs lean beef stew meat
2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled halved lengthwise & sliced 1/2 in. thick
1 medium onion, cut into wedges
1 cup water
1 tsp instant beef bouillion granules
3/4 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust depending upon how much heat you like)
1/8 tsp cinnamon
4 cloves garlic (I used 2 tsp garlic powder)
1 14 1/2 oz can diced tomatoes, undrained
1/2 cup dried apricots or pitted prunes, quartered (I used prunes)
1/4 cup chopped peanuts (optional)
Hot cooked couscous (used rice)

Cut meat into 1 in pieces. (I skipped cutting the meat because it tends to shred easy once cooked) Place in crockpot with sweet potatoe, & onion. Stir in water, bouillion, cumin, cinnamon, cayenne pepper and garlic.
Cover and cook on low heat for 7-8 hrs or high setting for 3-4 hrs. Stir in tomatoes and dried fruit. Cover and cook 30 min more.
If desired serve meat mixture over hot cooked couscous. Sprinkle each serving with peanuts.

Behavior Management

Adult and child.
In a BDI interview for motherhood there would be so many great questions.
You are sitting on the couch nursing your 1 month old infant, your toddler is throwing items over the gate down the stairs. How did you stop your toddler & care for the baby?
After a long walk in the spring sunshine, you explain to your toddler that it's time to go in the house. Upon entering he kicks, screams, cries, attempts to get away....you get the door closed but this show of emotion continues and now includes banging his head on the door, then knocking a kitchen chair sideways onto the floor. Meanwhile, the infant is crying needing desperately to be fed. How did you handle the tantrum?
While driving down the Deerfoot your toddler puts his foot on the baby's head and laughs loudly when you tell him to "Take your foot off the baby's head." How do you stop your toddler from continuing this behavior and keep the baby from receiving a sibling induced brain injury?

Oh, I could keep going. The only problem is I don't have the answers. Not effective ones anyway. Any suggestions? I'm open.

Has anyone read this? Thanks to Amazon it's on route to our house.

Last night was a glaring example that I over-eat when stressed. While preparing dinner for W & I (favorite husband was working late), I consumed ALOT of food....crappy food such as 2 chicken weiners, 3/4 box of white cheddar macaroni, cucumber, and a couple pieces of cheese thrown in there for good measure. Okay, so I am now very aware that I binge eat when stressed, so now how do I prevent it? The stress isn't going away. Thank goodness there wasn't any ice cream in the freezer and that I don't like pie or that Saskatoon pie would have been demolished. Good thing I'm not a drinker or I'ld be blogging from rehab with Miss Lohan and the other socialites.

"Put on your yamaka..." - Adam Sandler

This afternoon while nursing Baby R, W retreived my breast pad, promptly placed it on his head and went off in search of additional interesting activities while wearing his child sized yamaka. Wait a minute! We're not Jewish & that's not a hat.....

Nose Candy

Today during a rare treat of popcorn while watching...you guessed it Shrek 2....I noticed W's left nostril was a bit runny and what else? A piece of popcorn sticking out of it! So I retrieved that, told him not to stick food up his nose and went to his bedroom to change R's diaper. Once finished this task I'm back with W, who now has his finger in his left nostril, only to hand me a piece of egg white the size of my middle finger's finger nail. Ugh! Yes we had eggs for breakfast. What else is hidden up there? Thank goodness he gave it to me though and wasn't retrieving it as a treat for later.
Apparently, whatever is stashed up there cannot travel any farther and will eventually be sneezed out. As long as it doesn't ferment or something.
Motherhood is not for those with a weak stomach. By 11am I had changed several diapers, been vomitted on and had nose popcorn and eggwhite in my hand.

Summer Saturdays

Welcome Summer! Despite the steady rain on Saturday my mom, baby and I attended the opening of this season's Millarville Farmer's Market. It is my favorite thing to do on a summer Saturday morning....the drive through the rolling foothills of the mountains, the fresh air, the walk, the Breakfast Bun (yum!), the shopping. Although the weather was wet and the ground super muddy, the market was still fairly well attended both my shoppers and vendors. There are new vendors this year....a few wool & knitting kiosks, one is a fair share shop with felted bags etc made my women in Nepal, they can also be found at the Calgary Farmer's Market. Their neat item is balls of "wool" made from recycled saris. The colors and texture are amazing. I'm pretty sure I'll return to purchase some sari "wool" and knit myself a scarf.
We managed to come home with a Saskatoon Pie, Sweet Cinamon Bread, and willow welcome sign, but there are so many other goodies that caught my eye....next time.
Our little man slept in the snuggly the whole morning. What a good boy! Many people questioned if there was a baby under my rain coat, and one couple asked if I had a "puppy under there?" "Definately not a puppy! I'm not that far gone!" I've seen people wheeling their dog in a stroller, but not using a snuggly.
And who did I see at the market? DW. A past co-worker from my days in real estate. In fact she is the reason my blog name is Mmmmmahvelous as she used to call me MM. Marvelous M. It was great to see her & chat for a moment or two. At the very least to have her meet my little R.
A lovely Saturday morning well spent. Can't wait to do it again.

22 Months & 4 weeks. They're growing & changing daily right before my very eyes. I must remind myself not to blink as I'll miss so much.

Recovery

3 1/2 weeks of c-section recovery and mostly I feel great. Much better than anticipated. Today I cheated and lifted & carried W a couple of times. It was just easier than attempting to convince him to follow my instructions. No evident fall out yet so hopefully it's a sign of good healing.
Tonight I finally removed all the steri-strips from my incision. After a much anticipated soak in the bath. What crazy nurses told me that I couldn't bath for 6 weeks? That's just so bizarre. Thank goodness I asked my sister/nurse/doula if that directive is really true! Anyway, after removing the steri-strips, I have decided who needs esthetics? Just apply medical tape in delicate places and then remove. Much less expensive than having a crafty, croation esthetician trying to sneak a brazilian in.

Guilty Pleasures

Is there anything better than sleep when you have an infant? Yesterday, I took great pleasure in napping twice during the day, and having a morning lay-in. How can one accomplish this with two under two? Were the children locked in their rooms? Given sleep inducing drinks? Glued to the TV? No. My favorite husband was home and my mother is here too. Wuhoo! Not only was I able to sleep yesterday, but our laundry was done for us as well. Washed, dried, folded and delivered to the appropriate rooms. Oh so spoiled! Oh what a perfect Sunday!
Unfortunately I have to share my mom with my sister so she's left us for a day or two, but will return. What a wonderful help she's been. Attitude of gratitude...thanks Mom!

Perspective

Dear friends were blessed with triplets this January (due date in April, but they arrived early). All babies are home now getting to know their 2 yr old sister. Can you imagine their household? Can you? I barely can fathom it.... 4 children under 2yrs of age. In addition to the "regular routine", Mrs. Triplet is nursing/pumping for these little ones. She is amazing! I need to look to her for guidance and inspiration to set up a schedule so that I can ensure R gets a bottle each day... among other things....like showering, turning the TV (Shrek) off now & then, etc. My life is a breeze comparatively speaking.
Now, where is that motherhood manual? Why isn't it in English?

"That'll Do Donkey"

While we were in hospital delivering R, the infamous Uncle B stayed with W. What a godsend! Not once did I worry about W. I wholeheartedly knew he was more than okay being at home with his Uncle.
However, during this time they fostered a love for Shrek. Apparently, W started hugging the TV anytime the Shrek & Ford commercials came on TV. Now, let me explain that those commercials are the only time W has seen Shrek. Until now the movie hadn't graced our household. I guess Uncle B felt sorry for our little man who was only able to see his new found friend in the odd commercial because he then delivered both DVDs for W. Who LOVES them! He's infatuated. And let me just add that it's helped me immensely in these new days of having two boys to care for. W asks for Shrek as soon as he gets out of bed (sorry Elmo....Shrek is #1 these days) and would watch Shrek 2 all day long if he was able.
Thanks Uncle B! You've saved us all. Shrek is my new found friend too.

PS: Come home soon....the boys are asking for you. All three of them!

Picture This...

Descending the stairs to the main floor, I find W sitting on the island with B washing his face.
B: We had a little incident
M: What did he get into? Fruit?
B: No worse....your lipstick. He was sitting so quietly on the couch watching TV while I cooked his egg for breakfast. Then when I checked again he had your lipstick.
M: lol
B: How much did it cost?
M: MAC...about $15...but the pyjamas are $20.
W: whine, wiggle, whine..aka..quit washing my face and let me go!
Our life is now a zoo....might as well visit one too!
Park'n'Ride...first family of four trip to the park.
R's second bath at home. Thanks Dad!

Time Out - Knitting

On R's third day here, this lovely gal from knitting class stopped by with a handknit kimono sweater and matching hat for our little fella. How thoughtful!

My poor fellow knitting pal though....I answered the door in my pj's with uncombed hair. Yes, it was noon-ish, but in my defence it was my first day home from the hospital.

In other knitting news, I'm looking for a simple project again. Any suggestions?
